Probiotics are live micro-organisms that benefit digestion by improving the balance of intestinal micro-organisms. Prebiotics on the other hand, provide "food" for the probiotics and therefore ensure that these work effectively. Floraplex is a supplement that combines the benefits of probiotics with this of prebiotics and is known as a symbiotic supplement.

The gastrointestinal tract is a complex ecosystem in which there is a deliate balance between the specie s of bacteria. Most of the bacteria are present in the colon where the concentration tanges between 1011 -1012 colony forming units (CFU) per millilitre. The beneficial use of micro-organsims in food fermentation such as dairy products has been used for hundres of years. The two species thought to have the most beneficial effects are Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus and accordingly have been included in Floraplex.

Bififobacteria appear to be the most important micro-organsims in the intestine for providing a microbial barrier  to infection. These bacteria help increase the level of immune cells. Floraplex contain Bifidobacterium bifidus , Bifidobacterium longum and Bifidobacterium infantis.

Lactobacillus refers to the bacteria’s ability to produce lactic acid. Lactobacilli are considered "friendly" bacteria and are taken for the purpose of recolonizing areas of the gut where they would normally occur. The body relies on the normal micro-organisms for several functions including metabolizing food, absorbing nutrients and preventing colonization by harmful bacteria. Lactobacilli appear to improve the bioavailability of minerals, stabilize the gut mucosal barrier and decrease intestinal permeability. Floraplex contains Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus rhamnosus.

Fructo-oligosaccharides make up the prebiotic component of Floraplex. These are non-digestible food ingredients that stimulate the growth and/or the activity of the probiotics.
